Martha Simpson – Woodwork
Martha’s mother was raised on a farm in Piney Creek, so, she spent a good deal of her childhood there and later years visiting family. She has always had a love for Alleghany and fond memories of the farm culture in her early days (though she was born and raised in Wilkes).
Martha knew nothing about woodturning when she retired after a 40+ year career in pediatrics. She began thinking of hobbies she wanted to explore in her free time. She woke up one night with the word “woodturning” in her head. Within 2 weeks she had her first lathe and a “lathe operation class” completed. She grew up watching her father work with wood in his basement shop. Little did she know that he must have passed on a dormant gene that awakened!
She is now passionate about her hobby and the myriad of different things she can do with a lathe (and a few hundred other little tools). Some of her pieces are enhanced with pyrography and a bit of paint here and there.
